A story of courage, dedication, and the respectful retirement of our nation's most treasured symbol

In the heart of St. Louis, a remarkable organization stands as America's only special needs color guard, carrying forward a proud tradition of service that spans over 50 years. The St. Louis Special Needs Color Guard (STLSNCG) represents something truly special in our community – a group that combines patriotic duty with inclusive service, creating opportunities for special needs youth and adults to serve their country with dignity and honor.

A Unique Mission of Service and Inclusion

The St. Louis Special Needs Color Guard holds a distinction that sets them apart from every other organization in America. As the only special needs color guard in the United States, they've created a space where individuals with special needs can participate meaningfully in patriotic ceremonies and community service. This isn't just about inclusion – it's about recognizing that service to country comes in many forms, and every American deserves the opportunity to honor our flag and veterans.

Over the past seven years alone, this dedicated group has ceremonially retired over 20,000 flags from service, ensuring that our nation's symbol receives the respectful treatment it deserves when it can no longer fly proudly. But their service extends beyond flag retirement – they've also purchased and placed 35,000 American flags on the grave sites of fallen heroes, creating a moving tribute that honors those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

The Sacred Duty of Flag Retirement

When an American flag is no longer fit to fly, it must be retired respectfully. The STLSNCG has made this tradition a central part of their mission. Their next retirement ceremony is scheduled for May 26, 2025, continuing their work of honoring each flag with the dignity it deserves.

These events teach our community about patriotism, tradition, and respect – values that unite us across generations and abilities.

A Partnership Built on Shared Values

At Baldwin Priesmeyer, we proudly partner with the STLSNCG to ensure that all retired flags from our maintenance services are given a proper farewell. We simply notify the team when flags are ready, and they incorporate them into formal ceremonies.

This collaboration ensures that every flag – whether flown at a school, business, or public institution – is treated with care and reverence, no matter its size or location.

Supporting a Worthy Cause

As a nonprofit, the STLSNCG depends on community support. Donations help cover costs for ceremonies, equipment, and programming that gives members confidence, purpose, and a sense of belonging. For many participants, this is their chance to serve, grow, and connect with their community in a powerful way.

The Future of Patriotic Service

The STLSNCG continues to grow, and their upcoming May ceremony is just one example of how they plan to expand their reach. For local organizations, partnering with them is an easy way to ensure flags are retired with respect.

More than a service, it’s a legacy – one of community, inclusion, and honoring the values that unite us as a nation.

A Legacy of Respect and Service

The story of the St. Louis Special Needs Color Guard is one of respect – for the flag, for those who serve, and for everyone’s ability to contribute. Their 50-year history is proof of the enduring power of inclusive service.

At Baldwin Priesmeyer, we are honored to support their mission. Together, we ensure that each flag receives the respectful send-off it deserves – and that every person has the chance to make a difference.
